How did you make the decision to have your child participate in
the program?
Otey needed one-on-one attention for education purposes. He previously
knew nothing when it comes to numbers, etc.
How have you been able to give input into how your child's needs
are met?
Yes. . .
Who are the ongoing participants on your child's IEP team?
preschool coordinator, nurse, preschool teacher, family involvement
specialist, 2 Head Start teachers, and others.
How are you communicated with on a daily or weekly basis?
Daily
How has the program benefited your child?
Otey loves school. He has opened up to people, he trusts more people
and is able to BE ONE OF THE CHILDREN. . . to play and learn.
Does your child have a special friend?
Yes, Austin.
What advice would you give to other parents in placing their children
in inclusive programs?
Be patient with staff and the child. Sometimes one will think your child
is not progressing, but watch and listen, and then see how they have
grown.
To what extent do you feel involved in the overall program?
I can come and go whenever and ask when the staff needs my help. I love
the staff and mostly they are genuine people who love all the children.
How do you feel your child is benefiting from the inclusive aspect
of the program?
Very well.
Have you had any concerns? If so, how have these concerns been
addressed?
Otey's behavior. His teacher and I have a reward system for Otey's "good"
behavior and it works for him and others. Also the teacher and the paraprofessionals
are very patient and show him love and consistency, and he needs that.
