What is your educational background?
I have my in bachelors in social work from Kansas State University, plus
20 or more hours in women's studies and 20 or more hours in human development.
What other experiences, or staff development has prepared you for
inclusion?
I've always had an interest in children with special needs. Most of
my training has been informal and hands on, although I have acquired
many of my CEU hours attending trainings on topics related to children
with special needs. All of these experiences as well as my own experience
as a parent has convinced my that inclusion is beneficial to all
children.
What is your job role?
Social work staff is responsible for recruitment of children. We also
complete family strengths assessments and referrals to and information
about community resources that families may find useful. Social work
staff provide ongoing social service support to the education staff
by visiting the classroom on a regular basis as well as social service
follow up and support to families who request it.
What is your role regarding the inclusive component of the program?
We are often the first contact that parents have with out school. We
routinely make referrals for screening and evaluation if children aren't
already receiving services. If no other transportation is available,
we transport parents to and from evaluations, IEPs and placement meetings.
We assist in communication between parents and the special needs team
members. We offer family strengths assessments and referrals to and
information about community resources available to families.
Do teachers help children with disabilities and typically developing
peers become friends?
Yes. Typically developing children are encouraged to be "buddies" or
helpers. Sometimes given specific helping tasks. Being a helper not
only encourages friendships but gives students leadership roles and
boosts self-esteem.
How are parents of children with special needs included to participate
and get involved with the school?
Parents of all children attending our school are invited to the many
family activities and workshops that we provide each year. In addition,
parent involvement is strongly encouraged both in our classrooms as
well as other planning. Policy and advisory committees. Parents of children
with special needs are no exception. Child care and transportation is
provided for all parent activities. In addition, parents are included
in the evaluation and placement process. Communication with parents
is enhanced through a notebook where parents/special education team
communicate. This notebook is kept in the child's backpack.
