Circle time

  • Provide the child with a method to:
    • Say hello to each child in the group.
    • Tell the group when it is "My turn."
    • Make a choice about what they would like to do after circle time.
    • Answer Yes/no or choice questions.
    • Share a message about something they did at home.
    • Talk about different weather conditions.
    • Tell the day of the week and the date.
    • Ask about the daily schedule or about peers. ("Is (John) here today?")
    • Request to sing a song.
    • Respond, "I'm here."
    • Tell about something they brought from home.
    • Read the daily lunch/snack menu to the group.

  • Provide a switch to operate a recorded tape of an adult reading the "story of the day" as the class looks at the book.

  • Provide a switch or a loop tape with single repetitive phrases.

  • Make communication boards/overlays that are specific to the story to provide an interactive reading experience.

  • Use props to enhance the story.

  • Students can pull props from a choice board to reinforce matching or identification skills during readings and place in the book.

  • Provide a method for the child to say:
    • "Turn the page, please."
    • "Read it again!"
    • "I can't see."
    • "I like that story. / I don't like that story."
    • "Let's read                    ."
    • "That's scary / funny / silly!"
    • "Wait!"
    • "Why did he do that?"
